Loom Chairs; An innovative transformation of an inherited Craft into Design

One of the artist’s accomplishments throughout the project was exploring the traditional ground loom used by Palestinian women. After designing a range of beautifully woven stools, she revived the ground loom, recognizing its essential role in weaving, which had become disconnected from the Palestinian urban scene. She integrated the loom’s mechanism into a chair, transforming it into a self-weaving device, making it a living product. This work represents the revival of tradition as well as contemporaneity. The design experimentation was supported by an art residency at the Al-Qattan Foundation, where she deeply investigated the technique and the design and developed the weaving concept.

‘The 5th and last edition of the Loom chair is designed for weaving inspired by the traditional Palestinian rugs. The chair is highly durable, stable, and comfortable using Palestinian locally sourced and handspun wool, dyed with natural pigments.’

The artist fully designed and implemented the chair during her residency at the Alqattan Foundation. The back slides on movable rails along the wooden bars, allowing for weaving similar to the traditional ground looms in Palestine.

Another Loom chair edition was developed to match the standard for table dining purposes, paying more attention to details and the joinery details of the wood and wool.
